Where does a design firm turn when they need a logo? PG Enterprises, a successful design/build firm in Montgomery County, MD, became PGE, Inc., in 2001. A new company needs a new logo, and the Design Studio at Scriptoria was PGE's choice for a creative partner. First Consultation Lucinda Gallalee (our contact at PGE) had a clear vision of what she wanted: a logo that was simple, clean, and understated. In addition, we had an established color scheme (forest green and gold), and a "pillar" theme from their previous logo to work with. She was open to a variety of styles, so we focused on the "feel" we wanted to create—either an "intimate and friendly" logo that would emphasize the service aspect of their business, or a "corporate" look that would convey their capabilities and craftsmanship. Initial Designs Our initial rough layouts ("roughs") were created as a starting point for the next round of discussion. They were rendered in green or black and white. Several variations of strong lines and bold type covered the "corporate" look, while variations of a calligraphic, free flowing house outline and more stylized typefaces reflected the "intimate" feel. Click here to see the initial roughs in PDF format. (Roughs are best viewed in full page mode. See below for information about the PDFs on our site..) From the outset, it was clear that the intimate look was the right one for PGE. They are a business that focuses on residential remodeling, and the house theme fit the impression they wanted to create. Very little modification was required, other than fine tuning the design, adjusting the proportions of the elements, and color placement. Revised Designs Because of the favorable response to the first proofs, the second round of the process was greatly simplified. The second set of proofs (PDF) shows the final layout, with single color and black renderings. Stationary design was done at the same time. The three dimensional version shown below was created for the company web site. (Scriptoria is building the site, and provides on-going creative design, maintenance and hosting services.)
